Dr Lachie Hayes completed his medical degree at the University of Adelaide and underwent six years of extensive advanced training in clinical and laboratory haematology across The Royal Melbourne Hospital, Austin Hospital, Ballarat Base Hospital and The Royal Children’s / Royal Women’s Hospitals.
Lachie has served the northern community through his tenure at Northern Health for a decade and a half, founding the Clinical Haematology Service in 2009, establishing and consolidating Cancer Services (including Ambulatory Care and Hospital-in-the-Home) in 2018 as their inaugural Medical Divisional Director, and supporting the introduction of the service wide EMR and other patient information and communication projects in the role of the service’s first Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO).
With over 15 years of experience caring for patients in the northern suburbs across both public and private as a General Haematologist, Medical Executive and Health Informatician, he has resumed his commitment to community haematology in the north, bringing a breadth of understanding of the evolving digital health system and a deep appreciation of modern patient centred care.
Lachie is experienced in the full spectrum of haematological conditions, with specific interests in non-malignant haematology including anticoagulation / bleeding disorders, immuno-haematology (primary and secondary), myeloproliferative disorders, and thrombosis. He has managed women with haematological disorders in pregnancy for over a decade and is the Obstetric Haematology lead for Perinatal Medicine at the Mercy Hospital for Women.
To advocate for and facilitate comprehensive care for patients when needed, he can draw on established strong connections with other sub-specialist haematologists and other medical specialists at the Austin Hospital, The Northern Hospital, St Vincent’s Hospital and the Parkville Precinct (PMCC, RMH, RWH, RCH).
